Crypto Party: Basics

Tracking Reduction: Controlling Cookies

Cookies are used to identify you as you move between sites. This serves the purpose of advertisers who wish to be able to demonstrate to their clients that you are one of 'theirs'.

However, you can be tracked by anyone (who can deliver cookies from web sites that you visit). The question is, do you want to be?

Some sites depend on cookies for their functionality. The recommendation is that you do not allow cookies, except when you wish for the added functionality. So, you allow a selection of important sites that require them (and nothing else).

Securing cookies:

Testing

You need to see what happens when a site needs cookies.

Try to go to portalen.dtu.dk. You will be sent via auth.dtu.dk. It needs cookies. See what happens, and then add auth.dtu.dk with "Exceptions".

You will need to add more to this list. Your bank, your webmail provider etc.. In each case, you consider if you really need the cookie. If its not essential, dont take it.

Allowing a site

Click on the Excpetions button shown above. You get a dialog like this. In this we are adding rejseplanen.dk. Click on the Allow button to add it to the list (the bottom half of the dialog).
